Canceled MoviePass Today
I had really high hopes for MoviePass as a company. When I first heard of MoviePass’s concept I thought it was too good to be true so I quickly signed up. For almost the last year it has been the greatest subscription I have ever signed up for. The availability of movies for an affordable price is what eventually inspired me to start writing reviews and create this blog in the first place. In the recent months the company had grown to over 3 million subscribers and the company was not prepared to handle the amount of usage. They started hemorrhaging money to a point where they had to shut down service due to lack of funds to buy tickets. Customers were assured this had been taken care of and with new “surge pricing” they would be able to fund all future purchases. However when the next big blockbuster, Mission Impossible, released they quickly locked out their customers from viewing this movie and started limiting the movies available to customers based on release date and popularity. This goes against their original business model completely. Currently on the app there are only two movies available, one of which has paid MoviePass for advertisement. This feels borderline unethical at this point and has made me lose faith in the company as a whole.. All while this has been going on AMC rolled out a similar plan for $19.95 which includes all available formats including IMAX. If you live in a large market area this has become the better deal. Having the option of any theatre was great, but what’s that matter when I can only go see 2 movies? I have unfortunately decided today to cancel MoviePass and go with AMC to further provide timely reviews. I hope they figure it out but it seems the credits are rolling on MoviePass.
