Crazy Rich Asians: A Spoiler Free Review

We have seen this movie before.  Crazy Rich Asians takes the love story of the rich kid with a girlfriend who doesn’t know and a strict family and immerses it in Chinese culture.  Not the typical “hey, here’s some guys in a dragon suit and some fireworks” way, but in an amazing tribute to Singapore and Chinese culture.  Singapore becomes a character itself as a beautiful back drop for a timeless love story.  It showcases Chinese culture in a way that is inviting to those not in the culture, yet very inclusive to those that are. At no point in the movie, no matter what culture you are from, do you feel excluded or “left out” in any way.  With a great cast of Asian actors, which include many veterans and familiar faces,  Crazy Rich Asians brings a refreshing change of view to an enjoyable love story.

There is a good mesh of veterans, young up and comers, and new faces that show the care they put in to producing a quality film.  Ken Jeong (Wye Mun Goh) is the face everyone will recognize.  He brings his unique comedy to his character and it works well with the story.  Constance Wu (Rachel Chu) and Henry Golding (Nick Young) play the lead roles and do a good job of playing a young couple in love.  Both actors carry their roles well through out the entire film.  Michelle Yeoh (Eleanor Young) has the most accomplished resume and plays a firm Asian mother.  When on screen she shows true strength and is a key part in why this movie is so good.  Gemma Chan (Astrid Young Teo) is stunning on screen and has a well played story arc that brings more emotion to the movie.  The entire cast was enjoyable to watch for the two hour love story.

When Hollywood decides to tell the same story multiple times it often comes out stale.  This did not happen with Crazy Rich Asians due to great casting and a back drop of Singapore that almost plays as a tourism video.  The authentically Chinese version of a commonly told love story that everyone knows plays on screen fantastically.  Love, drama, and comedy are sprinkled all over Crazy Rich Asians with Singapore being the cherry on top.  Enjoy a night out with your special someone and enjoy a unique rendition of a movie that’s so familiar.
