Tag: A Spoiler Free Review
A movie that speaks to the childhood competitive nature that made you chuck your Nintendo controller at the television screen. A true story of a multi decade long game of tag sounds absurd until you watch the movie and realize you need better friends. The movie uses that friend comradery to drive comedy that only works between friends. The cast portrays that comradery well and you get to sit back and watch the roasting.
The cast is composed of some of the top comedic actors bringing a diverse range of comedic skills. Jon Hamm (Bob Callahan) always does a great job at playing comedy with such seriousness. He is never afraid to make fun of himself and will sell anything to make the scene work. Ed Helms (Hogan ‘Hoagie’ Malloy) brings his usual buddy role to the table. He’s played it often and seems to just be the guy everyone knows. Isla Fisher plays his wife, Anna Malloy, as an intense spouse supporting her husband in the game and I really enjoyed her contribution to the movie. Hannibal Buress (Kevin Sable) and Jake Johnson (Randy ‘Chilli’ Cilliano) bring their usual comedic styles from New Girl and Broad City which adds to the team well. Jeremy Renner (Jerry Pierce) plays the friend who has never been tagged. In playing this role he winds up playing a better Hawkeye here then any of the Avengers movies. This seriously could be his origin movie.
A fun comedy that hits home because of its authenticity. The cast takes an outrageous true story and makes it believable. The comedy is a little raunchy for a younger audience. I felt a few uncomfortable moments having to sit next to an apparent 13 year old that came with his mother when I viewed it. There is a shortage of good comedies out right now so if you are looking for something to fill that void then go check it out. I enjoy a good fun story with solid writing and you should enjoy this one too.
