Mission: Impossible- Fallout- A Spoiler Free Review
Given that the trailer for this movie has been shoved down your throat during the previews of every movie you’ve seen since last summer, you are sure to already have formed an opinion on it. For us this was no different. With that said, we were given a pleasant surprise with the direction of this movie. Going into Fallout a few questions were pondered. How was the world going to end this time? How long am I to believe that it rests in the hands of a 57 year old man? Does Tom Cruise have a death wish? Is that the most important mustache in studio history? Being this review is spoiler free the first question will not be answered. The other answers being, at least one more movie, indubitably yes, and if not important then for sure the most expensive. Fallout was a bit long at over two hours, but if it were to be edited any more then it would of felt rushed. Fallout keeps you guessing as to where this movie is going throughout both the first and second act with many suspenseful twists and turns. The fear that they would portray an aging Ethan Hunt as if he hadn’t lost a step was a bit unwarranted. We all stretch the imagination for our movie experience, however they didn’t ask you to believe a 57 year old man was single handedly devouring an army of youthful terrorists. As an audience that should be appreciated.
Tom Cruise (Ethan Hunt) takes great pride in this franchise and continues to find new ways to bring originality to it. The amount of stunts he performed in action sequences just so you get close up reactions, as opposed to the back of a stunt mans head, should be commended. Going clear must do wonders for arthritis because Tom is still a spry man nearing 60. Henry Cavill (August Walker) plays the douche government babysitter pretty well. He has a very rigid acting style that fit the part. The usual Hunt teammates, Ving Rhames (Luther Stickell) and Simon Pegg (Benji Dunn) bring a light hearted seriousness that contrasts their co-stars intensity. The stand out supporting actress ended up being Vanessa Kirby (White Widow) rather than Rebecca Ferguson (Ilsa Faust) despite Ferguson getting all of the trailer exposure. Kirby brings a Bond-esque seductiveness that really grabs your attention.
Despite this movie being thrown in your face at every marketing opportunity, it still holds up very well. If this is the last action role Cruise takes on he can hang his hat on Fallout and be very proud. If not for writing reviews on major movies, Fallout would of likely been skipped. After an entertaining visit to the theatre, this job is really paying off. You may not walk out of the theatre excitedly going over scenes, but you will leave entertained feeling you got your money’s worth. With all its intensity it wasn’t so violent that a child of adolescent age shouldn’t view it. Hopefully this is the torch that will be passed down to a younger generation of action stars. The Rock has filled a Schwarzeneger size hole. Statham is filling in for Bruce. Who can replace Cruise? Whoever it is hopefully isn’t afraid of heights.
