With an abundance of reboots in Hollywood, it is refreshing to see a franchise try to revitalize itself without scraping it’s history. MIB: International attempts to take a fun sci-fi franchise and revitalize it by providing an all new cast and location. With a high production level the movie was well done in many aspects, however the only “new” was the cast and location. Much of the film was very familiar with it being more than just a nod to the past. MIB failed to do anything new with the franchise, but it did succeed in continuing a story that many fans love.

Tessa Thompson (Agent M) is the bright spot of MIB: International. She is starting to prove her place among Hollywood stars. She does a great job of drawing you in to her character and delivering a solid performance. The rest of the cast give a slightly above average performance. Chris Hemsworth (Agent H) plays an agent who has sort of lost his focus in MIB but you never really end up caring about his character. Liam Neeson (Agent High T) plays his mentor and performs very similar. It’s not that their performances were bad, but it was hard to get into this film and the acting wasn’t good enough to engage you. Although it failed to attach you to the film, it was not bad enough to make you completely lose interest.

This is a tough call for The Nerd Cantina. If you have limited movie viewing time we would not suggest using that time to see MIB: International. If you do enjoy going to many movies this is a coin toss. Fans of the franchise should enjoy this continuation, however I could see many being underwhelmed with the lack of innovation. This version is much of the same. If you have children that are new to the franchise it may be more enjoyable, but it may be good for a family movie night on the couch. MIB: International ends up being the pack of boxers Fathers Day gift. Did you need more boxers? No, but are you mad you have more now, not at all.
