Long Shot: A Spoiler Free Review
Normally a political rom-com may not seem plausible, however with our current political circus Long Shot has become far more believable. Long Shot takes the unlikely romance formula and puts a political spin on the situation. With some vulgar comedy (which is typical for Seth Rogan), alongside some great acting (also typical of Charlize Theron), Long Shot is a delightful comedy to take a break from the super hero extravaganza that is 2019.
Charlize Theron (Charlotte Field) is the closest thing to perfection in Hollywood. The range she has in not just her acting ability, but in her physical abilities to transform herself are amazing. She plays the role of the Secretary of State with the right amount of dignity and grace while also being able to hold her own in delivering a comedic performance with a costar that is this generations leading funny man, Seth Rogen (Fred Flarsky). Rogan brings his usual humor to Long Shot. Not that it was stale, but you shouldn’t expect Rogan to extend himself into an area you haven’t seen before. Although he does play his role as a childhood friend of the Secretary of State and journalist well, it is much like many of the roles he has previously played. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it I guess. The supporting acting by June Diane Raphael (Maggie Millikin) works well in Long Shot. She plays the cut throat professional in a way that is funny while not appearing to show any effort to do so. O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Lance) plays Rogen’s best friend and his inexperience shows in this film. In no way did his acting ruin scenes but many scenes did not feel natural. Overall this is an enjoyable cast to watch.
Long Shot is a fresh take on movies that use the premise of “how’d that guy get that girl”. With politics being such a heated subject, it is fun to put a comedic spin on the behind the scenes action. The writing in this film is highlighted by familiar situations mixed with over the top comedy that flirts with the unrealistic but lands in comedic believability. A funny movie with comedy not for children, Long Shot is a great date movie or good for a relaxing night out with a few chuckles. If you aren’t able to get to a theatre often I would not fear missing this one, however at some point this movie deserves your attention.
