Isn’t It Romantic: A Nerd Cantina Review

Romantic

Just when you thought Rebel Wilson couldn’t take self deprecation any further, here come Isn’t It Romantic. A rom-com about a woman who hates rom-coms, hits her head and gets stuck in a cheesy rom-com. Yeah, you read that right. Wilson has now turned her self hate comedy onto the actual movie she is starring in. What feels like a modern day version of an old John Candy movie from the 80’s, Wilson attack’s the rom-com formula with minimal laughs and cringe worthy musical numbers that hit levels of cringe you couldn’t hit if you watched every season of The Office A Clockwork Orange style.

Isn’t It Romantic is not lacking in the star quality. Despite Rebel (Natalie) playing essentially the same character she has played since being wide on the wide screen, a few other stars make an attempt to poke fun at the rom-com genre. Adam Devine (Josh) tries to recreate the chemistry first shown between him and Rebel in Pitch Perfect by playing Rebel’s coworker. Priyanka Chopra (Isabella) lends her beauty to play a stereotype in the alternate reality rom-com. She doesn’t do a bad job but seems to of been added to not totally whitewash the entire movie. Liam Hemsworth (Blake) plays the male hunk in the alternate reality. Some of his lines were as funny as his attempt at a dance number, but not many. In a movie poking fun at stereotypes, the majority of the comedy came from the stereotypical gay best friend Donny, played by Brandon Scott Jones. It was so over the top you can’t help but laugh.

Isn’t It Romantic tries to poke fun at itself and occasionally hits the mark. The good parts were wedged in between some truly bad jokes and some “oh god, please don’t” moments. Aside from that the whole “hey I’m not the average woman and I’m ok with that so let’s laugh together” role is getting a bit overdone. If all you are is a fat comedian you are bound to become stale at some point and I have Doritos bags that have been open for a week that are fresher than this material. Do yourself a favor and wait until you can view this at home so you can feel free to audibly narrate your cringe. Then head back to our site and leave your rating and opinion.

About: Steve Vingua

I started this site because I love to share my opinion on many nerd subjects and found that often times I am sought out by friends to give my perspective. I started writing movie reviews and found it very therapeutic to put my thoughts out there. With some encouragement from my brother, The Nerd Cantina was born.
