Hustlers: A Spoiler Free Review

Hustlers

With Magic Mike being made for every woman at home with a B.O.B. (battery operated boyfriend), Hustlers has been made for every man with a light in his drawer that isn’t made for seeing in the dark. Hustlers tells the story of exotic dancers that use their allure to swindle intoxicated men out of more money than they intended to spend. If you don’t believe this is based on true events, you either have never been to a gentlemen’s club, or are the person that truly believes your stripper crush actually likes you. If you are the latter then Hustlers is your PSA. A few strong performances, an interesting story, and a lot of skin makes Hustlers a movie that entertains more than just the eyes.

If you were to say one day people will pay to watch a 50 year old woman pole dance near nude most would would laugh followed by a cringe. No one could have foreseen a stunning Jennifer Lopez (Ramona) at age 50 deciding to take on the role of an exotic dancer, and playing it like a true boss. Lopez plays a strong woman in full control of her sexuality with a hunger for money that drives her to a criminal lifestyle. She befriends a fellow dancer, Constance Wu (Destiny), and together build a crime ring to fleece clients out of as much cash as they could. As the ring expands we get supporting roles from Lili Reinhart (Annabell) and Keke Palmer (Mercedes) who add characters from different walks of life with their own stories and motivations. While the four main characters are showing the true power of strong beautiful woman we also get cameos from a few others by Cardi B (Diamond) and Lizzo (Liz). The cast took these roles seriously giving performances that keep the focus on the plot rather than on their physical assets.

Let’s be honest, we know what the draw of this movie is. Jennifer Lopez on a pole doesn’t just motivate men to the theatre, but also many woman in awe of her prowess. Jenny from the block does anything but disappoint any expectation of what you imagine her performance would be. She tells 1996 Demi Moore “hold my beer”. It comes to no surprise that physically she is unmatched. What may surprise you about Hustlers is that it was actually a well told story that doesn’t over use the sexuality of it’s stars to tell a story of ambitious greed mixed with clouded judgement. There is no need to walk into the theatre with lowered expectations, or feel any guilt after leaving either. You can even confidently bring your girlfriend to see it knowing she has something to appreciate as well. Hustlers will stand on its own as a well rounded movie, featuring “well rounded” women. You can feel good walking in knowing you are going to see a movie worth viewing and just take JLo in a g-string pole dancing as the gift to the world that it is.
