Godzilla: King of the Monsters: A Spoiler Free Review

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is everything you would expect from a Godzilla movie. I have said before your movie experience is often dictated by your expectations. If you go into Godzilla expecting a “Sundance” film and you don’t enjoy it, is that really Godzilla’s fault? Godzilla: King of the Monsters delivers everything it said it would. A visually monstrous experience with a story good enough to get you there, Godzilla delivers what it advertises.

Let’s be honest, you aren’t going to see this movie because of the acting, although the acting in this film is of quality. Kyle Chandler (Mark Russell),
Vera Farmiga
(Dr. Emma Russell), and Millie Bobby Brown (Madison Russell) all do a good job of driving the plot forward with a reasonably plausible motive that somewhat attaches you to the story even though the main draw is a CGI monster. They give the monsters some history, a motive, and add some conflict to give Godzilla some substance. Other minor roles played by Bradley Whitford, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Ken Watanabe all add to the over the top drama used to drive a story that may make some sense out of battling monsters. No one is going to win awards here folks so don’t expect that, but at no point when a monster isn’t on screen do you regret sitting in the theatre.

Is Godzilla: King of the Monsters a good movie… maybe? Is it a good Godzilla movie… you bet! Go into the film with the right mindset and you are sure to enjoy your viewing. If you tend to not like the monster genre because its too “extra”, then what are you doing in that movie to begin with? If you are looking for your next Twitter rant where you can take a dump on someone’s honest efforts to entertain an audience I’m sure you will be able to do so. When compared to many of this years top films Godzilla will have a hard time holding itself up to that standard, but the makers of this film were not beholden to that standard. They were beholden to the long time Godzilla fans to put together a movie worthy of the franchise and they did just that. So take a break from critical thought, and blow our eardrums out watching monster battle it out for dominance of the planet.
