Deadly Class: A Nerd Cantina Review

Deadly Class

Deadly Class is a new show on the SyFy network currently airing its first season. Being a cross between John Wick and Riverdale, Deadly Class offers a violent drama set in a school for future assassins. What seems to be a show geared for the teen audience quickly proves to be an intensely violent story pitting the children of different cultural mob factions against each other in a sadistic “Mean Girls” fashion. Deadly Class is proving to be one of the premiere seasons this year that you should not be missing.

With the majority of the cast portraying teens, Deadly Class brings in a few veterans as administrators in the school of future killers. The students roles played by Benjamin Wadsworth (Marcus Lopez), Lana Condor (Saya Kuroki), and María Gabriela de Faría (Maria Salazar) are played very well. There is a lot of intensity in this show and they handle it pretty well. Deadly Class brings in some known adult talent to counter the youthful cast. Benedict Wong (Master Lin), Henry Rollins (Jurgen Denke),
Olivia Cheng
(Master Gao), and French Stewart (Scorpio Slasher) all offer their varied experience to this ensemble. The entire cast takes their roles very seriously and offers an array of characters that compliment each other quite well for a far from classical teen drama.

The premise of Deadly Class alone is a win. Throw in good execution in adapting a graphic novel to the small screen and you have one of the biggest wins in new television this year. The stunt work is on par with any other action show you are currently watching, and many scenes pay tribute to the original medium in which this story was created. A show definitely not intended for a younger audience, however viewable by your typical desensitized teen, Deadly Class is not for the weak stomach. That said, the violence in the show offers an authenticity to the subject matter that would lose out if not there. So while all your friends are yelling at you to hurry up and binge The Umbrella Academy, be the loner nerd you want to be and counter them with a truly unique show that will surely shock and aww the unsuspecting viewer.

I started this site because I love to share my opinion on many nerd subjects and found that often times I am sought out by friends to give my perspective. I started writing movie reviews and found it very therapeutic to put my thoughts out there. With some encouragement from my brother, The Nerd Cantina was born.
