Whenever a parent hears that you’re planning to start a family, or currently working towards it, you’re met with excitement and encouragement. Despite the risks and possible struggle involved, generally parents respond with optimism. But under the surface, there is a little voice eager to chime in, saying “just you wait.” You’re Not a Real Parent Until… by Scott Dooley and Jason Chatfield describes the less-than-glamorous moments of parenthood that will undoubtedly resonate with readers who are raising small humans.

I have two young boys, ages five and two. Do I love them? Of course. Would I do anything for them? Absolutely. But does that mean I enjoy finding my son’s newest experimental artwork on our hardwood floors? Not quite. So when one of the pages in the book says, “You’re not a real parent until finding a pen lid makes your blood run cold,” my inner mom voice screamed “OMG YAAASSS.” And then I looked up to find my son holding a crayon to his next canvas AKA the refrigerator. But I digress.

In You’re Not a Real Parent Until… , Dooley & Chatfield wisely categorized situations by age – Babies, Toddlers and Kids, Tweens and Teens, and All Grown Up (because your parents are still your parents, whether you’re 13 or 30). That being said, parents at all levels will find something that makes them think, “Oh, so it’s not just us.” And if you’re like me, knowing how common some of these situations are is a reassuring reminder. Yes, parenthood is emotionally challenging for everyone. And yes, you’re doing fine.

Overall, I loved the book and recommend all parents to pick it up. The sentences describing gross and frustrating situations paired with hilarious illustrations are sure to entertain parents from all walks of life. I especially enjoy how the same cartoon characters are featured during the different stages as their children get older, and how diverse the families are. Extra points for Dooley and Chatfield.

Scott Dooley and Jason Chatfield join us for a Cantina Conversation to talk about how two childless Australian comedians came up with such an authentic book. We also learn about their plans for more published works. Keep an ear out for an upcoming episode of The Nerd Cantina Show podcast and preorder You’re Not a Real Parent Until…, available June 13.

About: Megan McCarthy-Biank

I've been reading for pleasure for a very long time. Back in 2019, Steve asked me to write book reviews for the website, and then I teamed up with him to do some interviews at C2E2 2020. Since then, I've been lucky enough to connect with authors and their publishers for upcoming book releases and interview opportunities, which then become Cantina Conversations for the podcast. Any fellow bookworms are encouraged to read my book reviews and listen to the author interviews. You can also find me on Goodreads.
