Upgrade: A Spoiler Free Review
If there is a constant in movies it’s that the future can be a scary place. This future is no different. Set in a year that is not disclosed, yet seems to be the near future if you keep up with new tech like I do, this movie plays right into the fears of any futurist. Refraining from pinning a specific year on the movie lets the audience gauge how far ahead it is which works well because you can put it as far or close to the present as you need to believe it. The movie plays heavily on medical tech and AI, so if you are a fan of the subject matter this movie should definitely peak your interest. The movie succeeds on many levels but felt a little slow paced. They try to get you connected to the main character and I never really felt that. I found myself more interested in just progressing the story and not really caring about the lead very much.
Logan Marshall-Green (Grey Trace), the poor mans Tom Hardy, does a pretty good job of playing a very physically demanding role. Acting as if a computer chip is controlling your body is a tough task, but with good camera work and what I would assume was an intense training session with the Jabawokees he pulled it off pretty well. I just didn’t feel connected to his character. Possibly due to the tired plot, but really at no fault of Logan. This is really his movie given that any supporting actors aren’t featured too much in the movie, which is why I think they tried to really tie you to him but really only accomplished slowing the pace of the movie. The combat scenes in this movie were so good you find yourself wanting to rush him into the next conflict. They were pretty gory so definitely not for children. I audibly let out a few “damn”s during those scenes. I would of liked to see a bit more of that in the movie but it was enough to keep me entertained.
I did enjoy this movie but I feel only because I love the subject matter. I listen to futurist podcasts and am heavily interested in where technology will take the human race. They touch on a few futurist topics but not in a way that would make the average audience feel ignorant on the subject. I fear though that if you do not care about the futurist subject matter that the slow pace of the movie might leave you getting bored at times and the stellar combat scenes might not be enough to keep your attention through out its entirety. With that said, if you have a bit more nerd in you and are looking for a movie after seeing the major blockbusters to fill some time on these hot days, this would be a good one to see. If you aren’t into the future of medical technology or have ever thought about AI than you should probably wait for rental. It will definitely be worth the five dollars on a night when you are looking for something new.
