Runaways: A Nerd Cantina Review
Runaways is Hulu’s first attempt at taking a Marvel property and turning it into a TV show. With Netflix having so much success with Marvel properties it only made sense for Hulu to secure some of its own. Runaways has achieved some success given that they are currently streaming their second season. The first season Hulu opted to make it part of their weekly release series line, but in its second season they made it fully bingable. Hulu chose a lesser known property in the Runaways, but the property’s dynamic is fit for a family television show. The show focuses on two groups. One group of parents that all belong to a charitable organization, and a second group of their children all within close age ranges. The continuing main plot is what would happen when the group of children stumble upon finding out that their parents are villians.
The shows main characters are the children and the story is told from mainly their perspective. This does make the show more for young adults, however the parents play a huge part of the story so there is plenty of perspective to keep a more aged audience entertained. There are a few of the young stars that stand out in the show. Rhenzy Feliz (Alex Wilder), Virginia Gardner (Karolina Dean), and Gregg Sulkin (Chase Stein) have given strong performances throughout the shows entirety. As far as the adults on the show Julian McMahon (Jonah) is the most familiar face and gives great performances throughout the show. Brittany Ishibashi (Tina Minoru), Ryan Sands (Geoffrey Wilder), and Angel Parker (Catherine Wilder) are some fresher faces that bring some strength to the cast, while Kip Pardue (Frank Dean) and Annie Wersching (Leslie Dean) are familiar faces that bring some good credentials. For the nerd fans it is welcoming to see some actors from older shows you might remember. James Marsters (Victor Stein) from the Buffy and Angel series is great and Kevin Weisman (Dale Yorkes), the nerdy I.T. guy from Alias, brings his comedic quirkiness to the show.
The first season of Runaways was a good introduction season. It has a lot of characters to introduce while bringing an entertaining story. That is not an easy task but they pull it off pretty well. The beginning of the second season feels much like the first. You are waiting for more development but instead you get more of the same. That is not entirely bad but after waiting for the second season to start you are kind of wanting a bit more. Luckily you can binge thru it to get to the second half of the second season pretty quickly where the plot shifts and the story advances even further. A show for teens that would fit well in a WB slot due to its adolescent tones, is made for Hulu so its more well rounded for an entire family to enjoy. Hopefully they pick up a third season and continue to build on the pace they left off on in the second. Give Runaways a shot and come back to tell us what you thought.
