Ocean’s 8: A Spoiler Free Review
You didn’t ask for another Ocean’s movie but you got one anyway. As a man with 2 daughters I am glad there is a movement of inclusion of powerful women into more leading roles, however I am skeptical of the trend of just rebooting themes with a female twist. Don’t take iconic movie characters and just give me a female version. Be creative. Ocean’s 8 meets the audience half way. They give you the same Clooney-Pitt-Damon dynamic in female versions but the rest of the cast play fresh characters which was refreshing. I went in wondering who was going to be the tiny Asian gymnast and the new Bernie with the anticipation of huge disappointment, and was gratefully let down.
Sandra Bullock (Debbie Ocean) is an American treasure and equitable to a female Tom Hanks. I have watched her in the theatre since Demolition Man and have not been let down by her since. Cate Blanchett (Lou) is coming off an awesome performance in Thor: Ragnarok and does just as well here even though she wasn’t asked to do much other then play off Sandra which she has no problem doing. Sarah Paulson (Tammy) is another great actress brought into a film to do way less then what she is capable of. I will admit it was a little off seeing these powerful actresses play roles that were not very challenging for them to play. I imagine the entire time filming it felt like a Friday, or when you get to school and you realize you have a sub. You’re gunna work, but you’re not taking it at all serious. I’m not a big Ann Hathaway (Daphne Kluger) fan but I actually enjoyed her in this movie. The rest of the supporting cast did a good job of not ruining the movie but didn’t add much to the dynamic. Rihanna (Nine Ball) plays a rasta, weed smoking hacker. Please don’t shock us with your range Ri-ri. Awkwafina (Constance), who I’m only mentioning to type her name, is the millennial they brought in to try to get a younger audience to come see a bunch of truly fabulous women in their 50’s or quickly nearing.
There is an easy metric to gauge whether you should see this movie or not. If you seen the others in the theatre, than you will probably enjoy this one. If you waited until Blu-ray, do the same, and if you only have seen them on cable while spacing out on your couch, wait until it reaches your orbit. This is a good chance to score some extra points with a date that has seen every nerd movie with you this summer. You owe her one and this is probably your best chance to see a movie she will enjoy without seeing a drama. The amount of cameo’s and stars in this movie is absurd and will keep her entertained. This wasn’t a bad movie in the slightest, but not a must see in any way.
