John Wick 3- Parabellum: A Spoiler Free Review
Every good action franchise gets three movies, minimum. John Wick 3 is the inevitable continuation to one of the best action franchises of this generation. John Wick 3 picks up right where we left off in the second installment of the franchise and turns up everything the audience loved about the previous films. The amount of care put into the final product of this film is something audiences can and should appreciate. When most films rely on fast cuts and CGI, John Wick 3 uses precision choreography and dedicated actors to achieve some of the best scenes in any action movie.
Keanu Reeves (John Wick) has now dedicated a strong portion of his life to training for action films. The John Wick franchise takes Keanu’s strong background and work ethic and creates one of the most hard core assassins to ever hit the screen. The amount of physical choreography it took to create the shots in John Wick 3 shows the effort level Reeves and the entire team of stunt men and trainers are willing to put in to achieve what can be considered the top tier of action movies. Ian McShane (Winston), Laurence Fishburne (Bowery King), and Lance Reddick (Charon) all reprise their roles with the same quality acting you have come to expect from these amazing performers. Reddick has a bit of an expanded role in this film and it is very enjoyable. Asia Kate Dillon (The Adjudicator), Mark Dacascos (Zero), and Halle Berry (Sofia) all are new additions to the John Wick franchise. While Dillon is a fresh new character, the others are a bit below par. Dacascos’ character seems to not be consistent throughout the film and Berry’s performance is lacking while playing alongside a very strong Reeves.
If there was a ballet that was a brutally violent performance with guns, it would be called John Wick. There are many fight sequences that seem to go on for an extended amount of time and are done in one single take. That involves weeks of coordinating choreography prior to shooting, with several other weeks of imagining the sequence prior. The vision to block out these sequences should be applauded while also commending the actors for such dedication and commitment. John Wick 3 is not without its flaws. The first act is simply amazing. Berry enters the second act and it seems to become a bit out of sync, followed by the third act that falls somewhere in between. They also go to the dog bit a little too often which takes away from the first films motivations and leaves the jokes falling flat. Overall it is still a great film with original fight sequences, solid acting, and a plot that takes you deeper into the mysterious world of secret assassins. There were multiple times where you could hear the entire audience try to hold back the “oh shit” reaction during multiple killings that rival Mortal Kombat fatalities. With that said, this is not a film for children by any means, but it is a film that gets the adrenaline running with some of the best tactical fighting performance you will ever see. If you are a fan of the previous films or love watching a good fight, go see John Wick 3. If you have the Dolby theatre option, it is highly suggested.
