Hotel Artemis: A Spoiler Free Review
Throw in the hotel from John Wick, a typical VA hospital, and a splash of The Purge and you get Hotel Artemis. That’s not to say it was a bad movie but an original idea it was not. This movie walks the line of good and bad but falls somewhere more towards the first. The casting director should take pride in most of that. It was the cast that kept this movie from turning sour. A new, yet not original plot of a criminal business in the near future with a strict code of conduct is interesting. Order amongst chaos is something I think most strive for, but without the main actors performances in this movie it would have gotten tired fast.
Jodie Foster (The Nurse) brings so much to a simple character. Jodie’s physical acting, mannerisms, and dialect are done so well the audience will forget that she is even acting. I doubt anyone else could of brought such depth to a character that doesn’t even have a real name in the credits. Sterling K. Brown (Waikiki) has an immense gravity in his acting that this movie really needed. He can convey so much with very little lines. His very serious and believable tone was essential. He is quickly becoming an actor I would go see any movie he was involved in. Sofia Boutella (Nice, the location) is a sexy assassin already staying at the Artemis. Her long lines and foreign accent play very well into this role. Dave Bautista (Everest) has an opportunity to show a little more range than he can in his Drax portrayal. Even if he is still playing a character of similar type. He does well enough to be encouraged to seek out other roles where he can expand on this further. Finally Jeff Goldblum (Niagara). Are you ever disappointed by a Jeff Goldblum performance? He has such a unique way to portray characters I anticipate his arrival into a scene every time.
I say this often but again I think this movie ranking is determined on your own personal movie preferences. The summer season always has many good options when attending the theatre. I would get out to see it if you are a fan of the actors mentioned above, a fan of the movies I compared it to, or are up to date on the summer block busters and are intrigued by the premise. If time slips by and you haven’t gotten the opportunity to see it yet I wouldn’t lose sleep either. The average movie goer is a coin flip on whether they will leave happy or underwhelmed. I enjoyed the characters on screen and the minimal story told that takes place in the matter of hours in the future, but I wouldn’t argue with someone that wanted a little more out of the movie. Not for children in the slightest and with a short run time at an hour and a half, Hotel Artemis tells a quick and simple story of a single night in a criminal hospital with characters you want to see progress driven by good acting.
