Happy!: The Nerd Cantina Review

Happy!

Have you ever wanted to watch Law & Order: SVU on acid? Well no need to fry your brain to do so, Syfy has a show to simulate just that. Happy! is the story of a girl with an imaginary friend who gets kidnapped at a children’s fest. She sends her imaginary friend to find help and in doing so finds our main character Nick Sax played by Christopher Meloni. He is great in this show. He plays his character as a cop that has seen too much with a comedic desperation so well. Ritchie Coster plays the local mob boss Francisco Scaramucci and forgoes the typical portrayal of a Don for his own style that works well. Patton Oswalt voices the imaginary unicorn Happy and sells it well. He is a good comedian and respects the medium.

Happy! asks that you have an imagination to enjoy this. You have to let go of reality a bit. Sometimes, especially later in the season, they ask you to do that a little too much. Despite going off the rails a bit at times, Happy! is very funny and action driven. Visually it is graphic and imaginative. The amount of gore and innuendo is high so Happy! requires a more mature viewer. Despite some outrageous plot turns and some truly creepy scenes, Happy! is really enjoyable as a morbid comedy. If you laugh at jokes that make others question your sanity then this is a must watch for you. Season 1 is available on Netflix now and season 2 begins March 27th. Give it a shot and come back to give us your rating and comments.

About: Steve Vingua

I started this site because I love to share my opinion on many nerd subjects and found that often times I am sought out by friends to give my perspective. I started writing movie reviews and found it very therapeutic to put my thoughts out there. With some encouragement from my brother, The Nerd Cantina was born.
