Future Man: A Nerd Cantina Review
Future Man is what you get when you cross Terminator, Back to the Future and South Park together. An absurdly funny show that takes an almost tired plot and turns it on it’s head. Currently streaming its second season on Hulu, Future Man is the perfect show to binge watch on a lazy, half baked day. With episodes in the 30 minute duration, you will keep telling yourself “just one more episode” until you realize you have drastically cut into your nights rest.
Future Man tells an outrageously comedic story with acting that truly sells it. Josh Hutcherson (Josh Futturman) plays a socially awkward kid who is determined to beat a video game that seems impossible and no one else plays. His role here is far different than his role as Peeta that brought him fame and he took a bit of a chance taking on this role. Upon finally completing his task he finds that the game was sent from the future to test possible warriors to save that future. Eliza Coupe (Tiger) and Derek Wilson (Wolf) come to retrieve this warrior and realize their plan may have not been well thought out. All three do a fantastic job of playing serious roles while delivering absurdly funny dialogue. Derek was the only face of the three that was unfamiliar however I look forward to seeing him in the future after his performance. The journey they go on to save the future takes them into all different time lines and alternate dimensions. The cross of a highly complicated plot mixed with kindergarten toilet humor makes for a hilariously funny story.
The second season of Future Man has recently released and does not have the same feel as did the first. The first season had a good balance of sci-fi and comedy whereas the second season goes a little heavy on the sci-fi. Still worth the watch given the time it takes to view them, but with the hilarity of the first season, the second does feel as if it lost a little bit of its edge.
Future Man is very crude. If the vulgarity doesn’t let you know to put the kids to bed before, then the full frontal nudity will. Do your kids a favor and spare them from it until they are at an appropriate age. Some images may do irreparable damage to their egos. Future Man will drop your jaw at times and leave you in tears laughing at others. Even if you are not a fan of sci-fi this show deserves a shot simply for the writing and comedic acting.
