Bohemian Rhapsody: A Spoiler Free Review

Queen

A movie as grand as the man it features,  Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of Queen and its frontman Freddie Mercury in an epic fashion.  A film that does more than just glorify a band of legendary status, but takes you on an artistic musical journey that features the ups, the downs, and ultimately the tragedies that made Queen one of the most epic bands to ever grace a stage.  Bohemian Rhapsody does a phenomenal job taking you back to Queens inception and tethering you to it’s larger than life lead singer showing you the artistic phenomenon he was.  If you missed out on the rise of Queen this movie does a great job at taking you back so you can almost experience the first time these songs hit the air.  You get a real feel for how groundbreaking these songs were and just how unique this ensemble was.  You can be sure that Queen will top the charts again this weekend more than 25 years after Freddy’s untimely death.

Make no mistake, this is Rami Malek’s (Freddie Mercury) masterpiece.  Few actors have been able to engulf themselves in a role as well as he has, let alone a role of such unique and legendary status.  In a more than Oscar nomination worthy performance, Malek’s portrayal of Mercury will take you on the highs and lows of a creative visionary torn by family, immense fame, and finally a death sentence in the form of an unknown disease.  Malek’s performance does not overshadow a supporting cast that recreates the chemistry the legendary band had.  Gwilym Lee (Brian May), Ben Hardy (Roger Taylor), and Joseph Mazzello (John Deacon) do a great job at recreating the bond that Queen had.  To watch what was the inception of some of the most iconic songs in rock history was not only nostalgic but extremely joyful.  Lucy Boynton (Mary Austin) plays Freddie’s wife and friend who was his inspiration and support.  She is also a great addition to this cast.  There are other notable performance from Mike Myers (Ray Foster), Aidan Gillen (John Reid), and Allen Leech (Paul Prenter) who play key characters in the rise of Queen.

Bohemian Rhapsody is not a film for merely Queen fans.  Any audience can enjoy the story of the rise Queen.  It is a story filled with love, drama, turmoil, and tragedy.  The film does a great job of telling the story of Mercury without focusing heavily on one aspect of his life while not glossing over any.  From start to finish you are on a journey with the legendary singer and his bandmates while they create the unique sound that is Queen.  The scenes of their studio work are a great glimpse into the minds of true artists.  This movie is great for any age that can handle sexual content.  There is no nudity or explicit scenes, however if you are very conservative there could be an awkward car ride home.  Bohemian Rhapsody is a truly entertaining biopic of a widely beloved band that cemented itself is rock and roll history.  Enjoy this movie and then I dare you to try and not sing a Queen song before you get to the car.  Let the Spotify streams begin.
